NWP Lay Servant Training - Advanced Course "Drug Abuse and Human Trafficking
Saturday, July 22, 2017 - 8:30am to 4:30pm
This event is sponsored by Northwest Plains District UMC

This course will be comprised of two presentations.  The first will be an interview with Stephanie Jones, from HELP--Heroin Epidemic Leadership Project, and the second a presentation by Heidi Mercer of Crime Victim Services in Lima on the subject of Human Trafficking.

In the first segment, Dr. Thomas Holmes, Executive Director of Covenant Ministry Services, Lima, Ohio, will interview Stephanie Jones from HELP. Stephanie is a recovering addict and a person well versed in the subject of the opioid epidemic.  She will discuss her own experience with addiction, as well as the problems associated with recovery.

The second segment will be given to the subject of human trafficking. Human trafficking, also known as modern day slavery, is the compelled service of others for profit.  It impacts people from every age, gender, gender identity, race, religion, and income level.  This presentation will provide information about what constitutes as human trafficking, give the scope of what we see here locally as well as across the United States. The presentation will also discuss: who the traffickers are and how they exploit others, explore factors that increase an individual's vulnerability for being trafficked, red flags to look for, and address the complex trauma that is associated with the issue.
